Future Leaders Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL)

Future Leaders AFRIL works closely with young people aged 11–18, supporting them to take part in creative music-making through workshops, collaboration and trips. Our young people are encouraged to lead the process and have ownership over the music and artistic practices they make by shaping their creative journey.

Through this, participants build their confidence, friendships, leadership skills and take part in activities that actively support their well-being. At its core the Future Leaders programme aims to provide a space for young people to develop and share their ideas, as well as celebrating one another. â€‹

Musical Hearts is a film co-created and led by our Future Leaders AFRIL cohort. The project was designed to give our participants creative ownership over their crafts and convey how they are connected to music in their everyday life. The aim of this project was for our young people to utilise and showcase a variety of skills that they have learned and developed throughout the Future Leaders programme such as: Music-making and production, interviewing and active listening, confidence building, team bonding, leadership and self-expression.

Not only did our participants produce and develop the film, they created a theme song (featured) that complements and reflects their time throughout the project. This is a little snippet of their world, we hope you enjoy!

Future Leaders Future Foundations

Following the development and success of the Future Leaders programme with AFRIL, we piloted the programme with our young people aged 11–18 at Future Foundations in 2025. While the overall direction remains consistent, the programme responds to the specific interests, ideas, and experiences of this group. Our Future Leaders are encouraged to express themselves, share their voices, and take an active role in shaping the sessions through co-design and creative discovery.

Through music-making and creative practice, joy and celebration sit at the core of the programme. Future Leaders provides a space for young people to support and celebrate one another, while also developing transferable skills, confidence, and potential pathways as they move towards adulthood and other milestones in their lives.
